 DEAD

do most american world maps seriously have america in the centre?

WE DO HAHAHAHA

Are you fucking kidding me.

In Chinese maps, Asia is in the center. Which nation is centralized depends on the map’s origins.

In Canada, our maps are cut through the Pacific, so we don’t offend anyone.

sometimes i feel like canadian stereotypes go too far and then this happens

Australian maps are upside down so Australia is above everyone else

you think this is a joke

are you fucking serious

this is weirdly fascinating

Yes, the maps are just one visual/design byproduct of nationalism and regionalism. Oh, and geopolitics. I’m a big map geek, so I find this stuff both amusing and exasperating. It also reveals a lot about attitudes, how things were spelled and/or named differently, and how the design of mapmaking has changed over time (or has stayed the same), especially through the Western canon of design.

It’s not too late for #throwbackthursday isn’t it? This picture was taken during my trek in Mount Rinjani. It was one of the most memorable adventures I’ve had and the smiles captured in this picture were witnesses of that moment.

The one on the right is Irma. She invited me to join the trip, so she was responsible for me being in this picture. The one on the left is Gama, whose antics often triggered me to act like the douchebag that I’m not—I’m against bullying, I only give ‘constructive comments’.

We go way back from college. Irma has always been the smart one. I would refer to her as my superego, the one who kept me on the right track—I have the tendency of derailing myself. Gama is like my alter ego. My heart bleeds a little everytime he shoots me with one of his questions. Together, they made my life on campus bearable. (I wasn’t exactly a model student.)

The trip was the first ever gathering we’ve done after years of being occupied with the rest of the world. After drifting for such a long time in our own orbits, we could finally realign. It was our little reunion.
